Article Marketing On Steroids
We first used article marketing for ourselves in 1999. By far, we were not the first to utilize this marketing technique, but we have benefited from it for much longer than many of our competitors.
In the years since 1995, the very earliest days of the commercial internet, the technique has evolved in a number of ways.
In the early days, it was simply a method to get free advertising in internet newsletters (ezines or electronic magazines). Since 2002-2003, the technique has been adapted for the purpose of getting links from third-party websites. By 2005, the goal was expanded to get "keywords" in the anchor text of the links on third-party websites.
Today, most people are more focused on the keyword links, but the truth is that most of the distribution channels are still in the newsletter mindset of plain text with only the url in the anchor text of links.
Two Types Of Keyworded Links
There are two types of Links with Keyworded Anchor Text for purchase on the web today.
- Most providers deliver the first type which is a link sold by subscription on a page that already has Google PageRank applied to it. The price of these links can vary from as little as $5 per month to as much as $3,000 per month.
- The second type is a link that is developed by companies like Links And Traffic, who utilize article marketing for the purpose of building links of a more permanent nature.
As an example of an article that has had some staying power on the internet, view the Google results for "Are Announcement Lists Effective?" According to the Web Archives, the first site in the Google SERP's (Search Engine Result Pages) posted the article in November of 2001. A visit to the first page in the search results indicates that the page that is hosting that article has a PageRank of Three. As of this writing, this link to one of our websites has been in place for more than five years.
Another article we wrote about computer troubleshooting was first posted on Hardware Hell in the summer of 2000, and we were able to get the site owner to update our resource box for the article in 2003. This page has been online promoting our websites for what is now approaching seven years, and the page currently has a PageRank of Four.

Links From Article Marketing Begin Life At PageRank 0, But They Don't Stay That Way...
When using article marketing in the link building process, new articles are created and placed on websites as new pages. All brand new pages on the internet begin as PageRank 0, AND they all begin in the Google Supplemental Results.
As that new page begins to collect links from other pages on the internet, that new page will gain PageRank AND it will be allowed to escape Google's Supplemental Index.
When Matt Cutt's of Google was talking about Supplemental Results, he suggested that most pages will come out of the Supplemental Listings within 90-120 days. To be precise, this is what Matt Cutt's said specifically, "Having urls in the supplemental results doesn’t mean that you have some sort of penalty at all; the main determinant of whether a url is in our main web index or in the supplemental index is PageRank."
It is important to recognize that a page that has a PageRank of Zero today, holds the very real potential to become a page with respectable PageRank down the road.
